Seasonal, well hung meat with unparalleled flavour, sourced from the wilds of Britain - delivered to your door.
The Blackface Meat Company believes passionately in the link between a healthy landscape and the highest quality meat. The two are so closely bound that the flavour of our products is of the land itself: the heather and the berries; the wild grasses and fresh waters of the burns and streams found in the most beautiful, unspoilt regions of Britain.
We are a family business, rearing Blackface sheep and Galloway cattle on our farm in the South West of Scotland, allowing the sheep to roam over 6000 acres of heather hills. We source slow grown ‘Iron Age’ pork and poultry from nearby farms plus wild game.
This is the beef, pork, lamb, mutton and game enjoyed by our ancestors, now available all over the UK via our efficient home delivery service. Call us if you like- we are there to help.
We are also long term, trusted suppliers to some of London’s best-loved restaurants, including Fergus Henderson’s St John and Rowley Leigh’s Café des Anglais.
Why Blackface Meat is special
We specialise in slow-growing, traditional breeds that enjoy a life outdoors, free-range on Scotland’s hills. We are one of the only British online butchers to supply tender, flavoursome, four year old ‘aged’ Galloway beef and Scottish bred Blackface mutton, reared for up to five years.
We believe that beef, pork and lamb fed on a totally natural diet will be as tender as it is richly aromatic and savoury. Slow growth on a natural diet of mainly grass and wild plants also reduces shrinkage in the pan during cooking, offering better value for money.
We know that the health of our animals benefits from a life reared outdoors in clean air, with access to a wide diversity of plants and natural spring water. Stress is also kept to the absolute minimum, with no-over crowding and short journeys to our local abattoir. We also believe that healthy animals produce meat that is good for you – a recent study reported higher levels of nutritious Omega 3 fatty acids in slow grown, naturally fed mutton.
We insist on traceability. Aside from our own farm produce we source pork and poultry from local suppliers who conform to our principles of natural rearing and historic breed. Our game is sourced from a number of estates, in England and Scotland, yet we know the provenance of every partridge, pheasant and venison cut.
Meat is matured to the perfection, dry-hung at a perfectly controlled temperature to develop tenderness and flavour. We do not think that conventional meat matured in plastic bags produces a comparable result [must discuss]. We can butcher to your exact requirements – just ask, we will not charge extra. Game is sent to ready trussed and ‘dressed’ ready for the oven,
